ANN ARBOR—Working in conjunction with the City of Ann Arbor, University Housing staff members have established 2004 Fall Move-In plans that they hope will ease traffic congestion on and around campus, and help to reduce traffic delays.

The combination of a much larger than usual freshman class and numerous construction projects on campus will make this year’s move-in particularly challenging, and the cooperation of faculty and staff is needed more than ever, Housing representatives say.

Each student has been assigned a specific moving day in an effort to distribute the number of arrivals per day more evenly and allow Housing staff to control traffic in specific areas more efficiently.

In addition, parents and students are directed not to arrive on campus before 9 a.m. or to drive on or around campus 4-6 p.m., in order to minimize move-in traffic during rush hours.

University faculty and staff are encouraged to avoid driving in residence hall areas when possible. Those who cannot find alternate routes, however, will find officers from University Housing Security, the Department of Public Safety and the Ann Arbor Police Department stationed at entry points near main intersections. The officers will help keep traffic moving and direct students to unloading spaces.

To further ease the traffic flow, some streets on or near campus will have non-standard traffic flow from 6 a.m.-9 p.m. on the primary move-in days, Sept. 1-Sept. 3. They include:

• Thompson from East Jefferson to Packard

• Madison from South Division to South State

• Jefferson from South Division to Maynard

• Maynard from Jefferson to East William

• East University from Hill to Willard

• Willard from Church to East University

• Church from Hill to Willard

• Observatory from East Ann to Geddes

• North University Court

• Washington Heights from East Medical Center Drive to Mary Markley Hall

• East Ann from Observatory to Zina Pitcher Place

• Monroe from State to the end of the cul-de-sac.

Sites for the Commercial Vendor Fair have been chosen so that traffic is not unduly disrupted. Vending agents will offer items for sale to students at three campus locations: the basketball court adjacent to South Quad on Central Campus; behind Stockwell Hall in the Hill area; and in front of Bursley Hall on North Campus.

Parking lot and space closures will affect a small portion of the University community. Housing staff members say they have tried to keep closures to a minimum:

• Thompson Street Structure (W3): Entry and exit will be permitted only on South Division;

• Lot W16 (the “Triangle Lot”), at Thompson, Packard and Madison: Lot will be closed to all permit parkers Aug. 31-Sept. 3;

• Lot M26, on East Medical Center Drive: The southeast spaces closest to the street will be closed to permit parkers Aug. 31-Sept.2;

• Lot M28, on Washington Heights across from the Mary Markley Residence Hall: Lot will be closed to all permit parkers Aug. 30-Sept. 2;

• Bursley Hall Parking Lot: Several parking spaces will be controlled Aug.31-Sept. 2;

• Richard Kennedy Drive: Parallel parking spaces for U-M service vehicles will be closed Aug. 31-Sept. 2;

• Lot NC46, on Hubbard: 150 spaces will be barricaded.
