Economist and author Julianne Malveaux to speak at CEW anniversary

DATE: 2-4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, 2004.

EVENT: Center for the Education of Women 40th anniversary celebration. Julianne Malveaux will deliver a speech entitled, "Making Room for Sadie: Race, Gender and Access in Higher Education and Society."

Malveaux’s research is focused on the labor market, public policy and the impact of policy on women and people of color. She holds a master’s degree in economics from Boston College and a doctorate in economics from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Recognized for her provocative, progressive and insightful observations as both a writer and columnist, her syndicated column appears regularly in more than 20 newspapers and educational publications. She also hosts a weekly syndicated radio talk show, Julianne Malveaux’s Capitol Report.

Birthday cake, toasts from CEW supporters and beneficiaries, and music will follow the presentation. CEW continues to provide the community and the campus with workshops, counseling, research and activities for women and men concerned with education, employment, leadership and balancing multifaceted lives. U-M Regent Olivia Maynard will give the opening remarks. Music will be provided by jazz saxophonist and CEW scholar Julieta Guzman.
