Tax guru Joel Slemrod to discuss Bush and Kerry tax plans

EVENT: University of Michigan tax expert Joel Slemrod will discuss the tax plans of President George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry in a public talk titled “Taxing Ourselves: Tax Policy Proposals of Bush and Kerry.”

A third edition of Slemrod’s book “Taxing Ourselves: A Citizen’s Guide to the Debate over Taxes” was recently released. He will sign copies of the book following his talk.

BACKGROUND: Slemrod is the Paul W. McCracken Collegiate Professor of Business Economics and Public Policy at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and director of the school’s Office of Tax Policy Research (OTPR). He was senior staff economist for tax policy at the President’s Council of Economic Advisers in 1984-85, has testified before Congress on domestic and international tax issues and served as editor of the National Tax Journal.

In addition to “Taxing Ourselves,” Slemrod’s other books include: “Does Atlas Shrug? The Economic Consequences of Taxing the Rich,” “Tax Policy in the Real World,” “Do Taxes Matter?: The Impact of the Tax Reform Act of 1986,” “Taxation in the Global Economy,” “Why People Pay Taxes: Tax Compliance and Enforcement,” “Studies in International Taxation,” “Tax Progressivity and Income Inequality,” and “The Taxation of Multinational Corporations.”
