U-M experts available on Arafat, Middle East, related stories

ANN ARBOR—With Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat gravely ill, Israeli and Palestinian officials have held emergency meetings uncertain about the impact his condition could have on the future of the Middle East.

The University of Michigan, home to the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies, the Center for Arab-American Studies and the International Institute, has several experts. They include:

Juan Cole, history professor, specializes in Modern Middle East and Muslim South Asia. He has studied the politics, culture and history of Shi’ite and Sunni Islam, and is familiar with Islamic radicalism in both branches. Mark Tessler, professor of political science, is director of the International Institute. Tessler is an expert on the Middle East and North Africa, particularly with regard to policies and strategies of its governments and political leaders.
