• Ronald Grigor Suny, a U-M visiting professor of history and political science, is an expert on the non-Russian nationalities of the Russian empire and former Soviet Union. He wrote “The Soviet Experiment: Russia, the USSR, and the Successor States” as well as other books examining the nationalism and revolutions that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

• William Zimmerman, a senior research scientist with U-M’s Center for Political Studies, has studied how behavior and conflict impact world politics and has analyzed attitudes toward markets, democracy and foreign policy in Russia. Other current or recent research areas include assessments of the mass-elite gap in Ukraine and Russia and its implications for the prospects for democracy and the changing predictive power of regionalism in understanding elite and mass orientations to the political economy in Russia and Ukraine.
