ANN ARBOR—University of Michigan Prof. Robert A. Weisbuch will serve as interim dean of the U-M Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies.

His appointment, for a one-year term beginning July 1, was approved by the U-M Regents at their June 15-16 meeting.

“Dr. Weisbuch has an outstanding record as a distinguished scholar and teacher, as a strong advocate of the undergraduate educational experience, as a creative leader of a large academic department, and as a thoughtful contributor to many University initiatives,” said U-M Provost Gilbert R. Whitaker Jr.

“He came to the U-M as an assistant professor in the Department of English in 1972, and was promoted to associate professor in 1976 and to professor in 1986. His administrative talents were recognized by his appointment as department chair in 1987 and his effectiveness as a teacher was recognized by his current appointment as the Arthur R. Thurnau Professor of English, 1993-96.

“In 1994 he was appointed as associate vice president for research and also associate dean for faculty programs at the Rackham School of Graduate Studies.

“Dr. Weisbuch’s published scholarship include several books and numerous articles, essays, and reviews, with primary focus on the work of Emily Dickinson and other 19th century authors.

“Within the University, Dr. Weisbuch has provided significant leadership through a broad array of departmental, college, and University committees.”

Weisbuch received his doctorate from Yale University in 1972.
