ANN ARBOR—Nancy Cantor, professor and chair of the Department of Psychology at Princeton University, will be recommended for appointment as vice provost for academic affairs-graduate studies and dean of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies at the University of Michigan.

If approved by the U-M Regents at their July 20-21 meeting, she will assume her U-M duties on professor of psychology.

Cantor will lead the University’s efforts to review and revise its graduate degree programs, U-M Provost Gilbert R. Whitaker Jr. said. “The title of Vice Provost for Academic Affairs-Graduate Studies signifies the interest of the University community in evaluating and altering, if deemed appropriate, the University’s approach to the delivery and support of graduate education.

“Dr. Cantor will chair the Rackham Executive Board and will also be a member of a central administration team concerned with graduate education and graduate enrollment management University-wide. This team will include the Provost, the Vice President for Research and the Associate Provost responsible to the Provost for Academic Affairs.”

U-M President James J. Duderstadt said: “During his 10 years as dean, John D’Arms greatly increased the intellectual centrality and credibility of the Graduate School. We are delighted that Dr. Cantor is willing to assume the leadership role at Rackham. We will look to her for strategic advice in graduate education across the University as well as on academic matters more generally. “D’Arms decided not to seek reappointment as dean and vice provost for academic affairs. He is the Gerald F. Else Professor of Classical Studies and professor of history. Robert A. Weisbuch, professor of English and former associate vice president for research and associate dean for faculty programs at the Rackham School of Graduate Studies, began as Rackham’s interim dean on July 1.

Cantor, who received her Ph.D. degree from Stanford University in 1978, became assistant professor of psychology at Princeton and was promoted to associate professor in 1981.

In 1983, she came to the U-M as associate professor of psychology. She was Area Chairperson of Personality Psychology in 1984-88, was named professor in 1987, served as research scientist in the Research Center for Group Dynamics in the Institute for Social Research in 1987-91, and was associate dean for faculty programs in the Rackham School of Graduate Studies in 1989-91. She left the U-M in 1991 to teach at Princeton.
